About USC (University Of California, Los Angeles)

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university in Los Angeles. It was founded in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California, making it the third-oldest (after UC Berkeley and UC Davis) undergraduate campus of the 10-campus University of California system.

It offers 337 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. UCLA enrolls about 31,000 undergraduate and 13,000 graduate students and holds the record of being the most applied-to university in the nation.

For the fall of 2017, more than 100,000 freshman applications were received.

The university is organized into six undergraduate colleges, seven professional schools, and four professional health science schools. The undergraduate colleges are the College of Letters and Science; Samueli School of Engineering; School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; School of Theater, Film and Television; and School of Nursing.

The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) is the official, system-wide study abroad program for the University of California. UCEAP partners with over 115 universities worldwide and offers programs in over 42 different countries.

UCEAP students enroll in courses abroad while earning UC units and maintaining UCLA student status. These UC-approved programs combine immersive learning with engaging activities.

Undergraduates Admission

UCLA offers over 130 undergraduate majors in seven academic divisions:

  • The College of Letters and Science 

The liberal arts curriculum of the UCLA College of Letters and Science begins by bringing together perspectives from many fields to analyze issues, pose questions, and train students to think and write creatively as well as critically.

  • School of the Arts and Architecture

The curriculum combines practical training in visual and performing mediums with a broad-based liberal arts education. Students enjoy a variety of opportunities to perform and exhibit on campus.

  • School of Engineering and Applied Science

Undergraduate programs prepare students for immediate professional careers as well as for advanced studies in engineering or other fields.

  • School of Music

This new school, established in 2016, offers a bachelor’s degree in music education together with a teaching certificate, as well as a master’s program in jazz that offers students the opportunity to study with legends such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance.

  • School of Nursing

The UCLA School of Nursing is ranked in the top ten nationally and is internationally renowned for faculty research and publications.

  • School of Public Affairs

The school consists of three departments—Public Policy, Social Welfare, and Urban Planning—offering one undergraduate major, three undergraduate minors, three master’s degrees, and two doctoral degrees.

Graduate Admission

UCLA offers graduate degrees in nearly 150 departments, ranging from an extensive selection of business and medical programs to degrees in 40 different languages.These graduate programs are instructed by a faculty of Nobel Prize winners, Field Medal recipients and Fulbright scholars.As a result the graduate programs at UCLA are some of the most esteemed in the world. In fact, all of the graduate schools— as well as 40 of the doctoral programs—consistently rank in the top 10.

Scholarships

UCLA offers financial support that may be awarded based on need, academic merit, background, specific talents or professional interests:

Grants

Grants are awards that the recipient does not have to repay. Sources include the federal and state governments, as well as UCLA. They are also awarded based on the need of the students.

Available to California residents only:

  1. University of California Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan.
  2. Cal Grants (FAFSA or DREAM Act and GPA ).
  3. Middle Class Scholarship Program (MCSP).

Student Loans

UCLA offers loans to its students. In the year 2017 the graduating seniors in the US have an average loan of over $30,000.
